Thursday's Thoughts
Why must my children collect things like rocks, bottle caps and magazine subscription cards?

Why is it so hard to pick a paint color that will looks as good on the wall as it does on the paint swatch?

Is it wrong to let my children stay up till 11 and sleep till 10?

Why do I spill food on myself every single day that I am pregnant?

Is white bread really so evil?

Why is my refrigerator so full, but I can never find anything to eat?

Maternity Monday - The Nursery
UPDATE: My doctor's office has a very stubborn ultrasound tech who would not give up today. We are officially having a girl! A very modest girl. Let the name wars begin.

We've almost made it to the point in all our crazy home improvement projects that I can actually start planning the nursery! Bud is painting his new office today, the wood floors and carpet should be going in upstairs within the next two weeks, and then the kids will be settled snugly into their new bedrooms with wood floors with no tiny Lego traps!

So with that in mind, I present to you the fabrics chosen for the nursery. A wonderful paisley:

A jaunty stripe:

A calm but pretty houndstooth to tone down some of the other busy patterns I've chosen:

And the piece de resistance, the bird fabric:

These fabrics are from the brand new Summer in the City line by Moda Urban Chicks. It just came out and I received my samples on Friday. J'adore these fabrics!
The nursery will have off-white beadboard up to the chair rail, and the walls will be a very light version of the turquoise in the fabrics. The nursery has three BIG windows and lots of foliage all around. I'm going to run with the bird decor, including placing a birdfeeder with suction cups right on one of the windows! Do you love it?
----------
I'm off to the doctor for a regular appointment today. Say prayers for low blood pressure, good pee and a beautiful little heartbeat!

This is why it's ridiculous that I am forty...
We had a great weekend! My husband is the bomb. The cake he and the kids made was a little runny, but it was so delicious. And they made me feel way more special than I deserve.

Saturday was Bud's birthday - we're a day apart - so we had our Bible study friends over to celebrate. What a great time - kids everywhere, lots of laughing, plenty of good snacks. I love this neighborhood.

So anyway, I was telling our friend David how silly it feels to say that I am forty. I am just not mature enough for that. He laughed and related this story...

Our other friend's husband, Mike, travels during the month of March (ski business) and David was at her house one day when Mike called to check in. David saw Mike's name on caller i.d. and answered the phone with heavy breathing. Mike's response? "Amy, is that you?"

I'm not sure I'm up to this whole 40 thing. It seems like a lot of responsibility!

------------------

Missy! I had no idea that you were out there! It's so great to hear from you. I may always be a teenager to you, but you will always be Missy to me! I hope you and the fam are doing well. I'd love to hear more about your clan. Thanks for your birthday wishes!

Another Day, Another Decade

Well, today I hit the big 40. It's actually fairly anticlimactic to tell you the truth. I feel pretty much the same as usual, except mentally it's a little overwhelming.

I've already had a nice birthday. I got beautiful flowers from my sister and a wonderful basket of goodies from my mother-in-law. I got to play Bunco last night with the neighborhood and they had a cake and sang Happy Birthday my neighbor, Audrey, and me.

Audrey turned 74 yesterday. She is one of my favorite people. I laugh at almost everything that comes out of her mouth, which is actually usually pretty negative and sarcastic, but in a funny, upbeat kind of way, if you know what I mean. I've been wondering this morning how she feels about being 74. I know right now I feel about 25, and I wonder if that's how she feels, too. Anyway, I feel very lucky to be in this neighborhood with so many good friends of all ages. We've moved so many times during our marriage, it's nice to feel rooted and connected to a community.

So, I'm off to celebrate my birthday. I know I'll be getting cake and dinner out after I have my hair cut and colored by someone who actually knows what they are doing. Beyond that, I have no idea. I hope there are a few surprises in there, but we'll see. I'm usually the organizer around here so that's a bit hard to imagine. But either way, I'm pretty sure it's gonna be a good day. See you soon!

Maternity Monday
Well, because I haven't been blogging much, er, any, I thought I'd give the days topics to discuss here on my blog. At least I'll have some direction.

So Monday is Maternity Monday, because there is no day of the week that starts with B for Baby.

Today's topic: baby stuff. I am so excited to have this baby move into our house, and out of it's current dark and cozy abode, but I could not be less excited about the stuff the baby brings with it. You know - large, brightly colored toys that seem to take over the house, because without them, the child's brain would apparently not develop.

I gave away everything remotely baby related just about a year ago, so we have nothing left, except for a small handful of precious outfits that big brother and big sister wore. So we're basically starting with a clean slate here. My goal is to keep it simple this time. Here is what I plan to purchase for this little bean:

Bedside Cosleeper. Love this item, used one with the the first two, and they slept in our room for a pretty long, time. Then it converts to a pack-n-play for travel. This is a must have in my book.

A sling. I had a Baby Bjorn with the first two and rarely used it because it hurt my back. And now all you Hippie Homeschooling Wackos have convinced me that a sling is the way to go. I'm looking at the Kangaroo one. I know, all true homeschoolers use a Maya wrap, but this is Texas and all that extra fabric makes me suffocate just thinking about it.

Diapers. Duh. I'm going to try the new G diapers. Can't do cloth, sorry. But my neighbor is having good success with these, so I'll give them a shot.

Clothes. I'm having a fun time making cute little onesies with iron-on stuff. I heart onesies. And, again, since we are in Texas, that's all this little one will need for a long while since she's due in July. Onesies and sunhats. And sleepers with feet in them. I'm swooning just now.

Toys. Whatever is given to us. I will not buy toys, I will not buy toys, I will not buy toys. They find eachother and multiply. Plus, being old like we are, most of our friends kids are bigger and they will pass down lots of brightly colored plastic items. I'm quite sure of this. Hopefully a few nice wooden items will be in the mix, too. Besides that, we have a lot of pots, pans, wooden spoons and the like. This kids is set for toys as far as I'm concerned.

A glider. Oh, yes I will be getting the Mac Daddy of all gliders. If I'm going to be a Baby Feeding Machine for over a year, I'm going to have a comfortable place to fulfill this duty. It will be pretty and soft, and in a sunny corner with lovely views out the window.
Who is getting more pleasure from the rocking, baby or me? -Nancy Thayer

Car seat. I have one already. My neighbor who recently had twins wanted her seats to match, so she gave me her older one. Don't worry, it passes all the safety concerns of a used carseat.

Stroller. Not the big kind. I had a Combi that I dearly loved before. It was bigger than an umbrella stroller, but still folded up rather compactly and I could lift it with one arm. I'll be going that route again this time.

Now, I am the very first to admit that I have serious Mommy Amnesia. So please, tell me about the glaring items I am forgetting or blissfully ignoring, but will need during the first 6 months. And don't forget to tell me about the one or two items that made your life easier during those early days and you wouldn't do without.

Happy Maternity Monday!

Big Announcement
Well, I guess it's about time I posted a little update here. It's not that I don't want to blog, it's that I really can't think of anything to say. I think this baby is sucking my brains out. But that's okay, soon I'll have lost so much brain capacity I won't even care anymore!

We had our "big" ultrasound this week. Because I am having a VERY BIG BIRTHDAY this month, the medical community handles me with kid gloves. Which is fine because I have no problem saying, "No thanks, we don't need that test, but I appreciate the thought." But who am I to turn down a "big" ultrasound and a good look at the little bompkin who caused all those vomiting episodes early on?

So we saw our baby's brain, alien-like face, heart, kidneys, arms, legs, fingers, toes. Peyton and Luke are in full agreement that I am carrying a lizard inside of me, though the doctor assured them that they are wrong about this. Yes, we saw it all, folks, all except the stubborn little lizard's private bits. No amount of poking and prodding would coax this child to reveal what is between his/her legs. The doctor hesitantly told us he thinks it is a girl, but would not stand by that prediction. And since my brother's "little girl" is now a 17 year old named Jacob, I'm not inclined to put all my eggs into the girl basket either.

So, the big announcement is that we are having either a male or female non-lizard. Congratulations to us!!!
